Young Friends experience a gallery talk with artist and FCA Board member Kara Walker
The Young Friends of the Foundation for Contemporary Arts is a group of young people who enjoy seeing and supporting contemporary art in a variety of forms—music, dance, theater/performance, poetry and visual arts.
The Young Friends group was started in 2004 as an opportunity for individuals to take advantage of the diversity of artists that the FCA supports, while providing needed financial support to the FCA. The Young Friends are invited to attend small, private, monthly events involving artists who have either supported or been supported by the FCA.
The 2009-10 Young Friends season begins with a cocktail party at FCA on September 16 to preview an installation of works from FCA's collection curated by artist Laurie Simmons, who will talk to the group. Several unique events are planned for the upcoming season, including a gallery talk with artist Kara Walker at her latest Chelsea exhibition, a visit to sculptor Donald Judd's SoHo building, visits to artists' studios and opportunities to attend private rehearsals and performances.
Event highlights of the past three seasons have included: a just-for-us performance by 2003 Grantee choreographer John Jasperse (who, several months later, was lauded for his performance at BAM), a studio visit with 2000 Grantee painter Julie Mehretu (while her paintings hung at the Whitney Biennial and just prior to her show at the Carnegie International), a private rehearsal of Wooster Group’s adaptation of Hamlet (featuring 2003 Grantee performer Kate Valk) and a day trip to master printmaker U.L.A.E. where generations of artists who have supported the FCA (from Robert Rauschenberg to Cecily Brown) have made prints.
